Have any of you ever been ballsy enough to make a joke at an interview?? Was there an awkward silence or did the interviewer love you all the more for it

yea. We were chatting and telling jokes. Just make sure the joke is "safe" and use common sense.

make sure that you "feel" the situation before actually making a joke.

I didn't tell jokes but I did make them laugh at different interviews talking about different things. Like one guy was asking about what happened in the previous cycle and I told him it was like putting all your eggs in one basket then kicking the basket over and for some reason he found that funny. Don't know if that counts as a joke.

I've made several jokes. Some went over like a lead zeppelin. Some were received well.

I once told a guy I had originally planned on becoming a ninja when I was younger, but realized there weren't many job opportunities in that field. He stared at me with absolutely no emotion.

One of my fellow interviewees was specifically asked to tell a joke to the plastic surgeon with whom he was interviewing. He told an insurance joke and apparently it went over well.

Little small-talk type jokes are fine, just try to resist the temptation to crack a "that's what she said" joke when your interviewer asks "so why do you want to come here?"

I was too busy getting drilled on Ceramide channels and apop 😡.

that's what happens when you do research for 7 yrs

haha true 😀. I'm just glad it all worked out. But hey gloryfield how have you been? I havent seen you post since the MCAT Discussion days.

heh. I think I'm well prepared if I get asked about research, but I didn't end up finishing Yale secondary so perhaps I won't get grilled.

One of my interviewers was a urologist who like me had worked as a patient care associate (PCA) before medical school. I told her about a joke I tell on my unit about the "PCA Olympics" with events that show off our PCA skills like identifying Cdiff in stool purely from odor and the butt wiping relay. She laughed her head off.

i told a joke to an interview question that i didnt really have a good answer for. It wasnt like a joke that you set up or anything, but my answer was clearly meant to be funny. It worked wonderfully and they were laughing histerically. They then moved on to the next question.

Yeah you have to be really careful. And bear in mind that a 50+ year old surgeon is not the same audience as your 20 year old classmates. What is funny to them may not be funny to the interviewer. Some people have a sense of humor that works in an interview setting, but I'd say that most people who think they are funny won't come off so well. And bear in mind that you need to come off as mature enough for med school, so any hint of immaturity (the whole "that's what she said" line of jokes) is off limits. Of course now that you've read this thread, that's all you are going to think about saying throughout the whole interview season. 🙂
