Ever heard of anyone doing prelim surgery for the internship year?

If anyone has input on this please respond. I can see some pros and some cons to doing prelim surgery as opposed to prelim IM or TY.

Obvious pro: lots of procedures which could be nice for someone interested in doing interventional pain or neuroICU

Obious con: unconventional and most neuro patients seen on medical floor as opposed to surgery floor with the exception of neurosurg patients.

Please post your thoughts!!!

Most of the programs I'm interviewing at require 6-8 months of internal medicine for the prelim year. I'm not so sure you would be able to meet this reqirement with a prelim in surgery.

Thanks for the heads up. I had no idea of the specific IM requirements. Just goes to show you that the more you know....the more you realize how little you really know.
