Hello! I remember being in your shoes and trying to gather all the info I could from SDN, so just trying to pay it forward haha.
How do you like the program?
-I absolutely love it! The faculty here really care about their students and want them to succeed. If you ever have a question about anything, you can expect to receive a response the same day or next day, if not within a few hours (that goes for Med Master's Faculty as well as your professors). They pair you with a "Big Sib" who is a year ahead of you in the program to mentor you throughout your time in the program and that was beneficial for me in terms of getting acclimated to being in Norfolk as well as starting the program. The Med Master's Faculty assist you during your med school application cycle by reviewing your application materials, helping you build your school list, etc. There's an Academic Development Department here where you get paired with an advisor who works with you to identify your learning style and study strategies that work best for you. I meet with my advisor on a regular basis and it's been incredibly helpful. Peer tutoring is also available at no cost to students. I've made some of my greatest friends in this program and it's really easy to form study groups with your classmates (although virtual now). The student body here is heavily involved with community service, so there are numerous opportunities to participate in that if you're interested. Your professors as well as the physicians who work at the school are very accessible and it's easy to find a mentor here, get involved with research, etc. It's just a really supportive environment and I feel that made all the difference for me in terms of my success in this program. It's like having a home away from home!
Would you do it all over again?
-If I had to go back in time and do the application process over again I would choose EVMS a million times. Being in a Special Master's Program can get stressful sometimes so idk if I would want to put myself through that again haha. But if I had no choice but to do a SMP again, I would pick EVMS for sure.
How's Norfolk?
-I love living in Norfolk. The area immediately surrounding the school is known as Ghent and it's a slow paced neighborhood. Downtown Norfolk is literally across the street from the school and Virginia Beach is only a 20-30 min drive, so I like having access to both Ghent and the city when I want some excitement lol. There's a lot of stuff to do in the area: hiking, shopping, restaurants, bars, beach, etc. It has something for everyone.
Why did you choose to apply to 2 year vs 1 year? Did you apply to both?
-I chose the 2 year because I needed to repair my gpa as well as retake the MCAT. I liked that they had a MCAT Kaplan Course already built into the curriculum for the 2 year program. If you're unsure of which program is the best fit for you, you can always reach out to someone in the Med Master's Department. They are very nice and will be able to tell you which one would be the best choice for you. I personally didn't apply to both.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!
