hey guys,

I never took evolution as a course and I’m now struggling to understand what neo-Darwinism and inclusive fitness mean. Could some please help me out? Thanks

From what I understood:
Neo-Darwinism= connects Darwinism w genetics. Says that mutations eventually lead to evolution?
Inclusive fitness=the ability to pass on similar genes...how does this relate to altruism?

Neo-Darwinism is the synthesis of Darwinian principles of evolution (especially natural selection) and Mendelian genetics. It's about considering evolution on not only an organismic scale but also on the genetic scale. ...And that's really all you really need to know about that.

Inclusive fitness involves individuals who share genes. By being altruistic toward someone who shares your genes, you promote the passing down of the genes you share to future generations. Consider this example: Why do parents make huge sacrifices for their children, as opposed to their neighbor's children? Here is the answer from an evolutionary standpoint: The parents who had the strongest instinct to take care of their children were the ones who were most successful at passing along their genes to future generations (including the genes that coded for this instinct). Simply put, by being altruistic toward his children (or nephews or uncles or siblings), an individual can promote the passing down of his genes. This applies to non-human animals, as well.
