I have been trying to write a personal statement for a few research programs, but I have been having a hard time composing it. I have stuff down, but it seems to jump around between ideas. So, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share an example of an essay they used to apply to one such program. I would really appreciate it if someone would be willing to help me out.

Thanks

P.S. I promise I won't use it. I have morals.

Dear Dr. X,

I am premed and I need research experience so I can put it on my application for medical school. I am not interested in your research or any research for that matter, but I can pretend to be interested and will work hard so you will have good things to write about me when I ask you for a letter of recommendation later on.

Sincerly,
Y

Basically talk about that your a premed interested in research because ultimately you believe it's what drives medicine forward. Just elaborate a lot more and add a lot of extra things.

Prob not too much help, but it's a start

not funny, why do people actually have the time to post things like this.

I thought it was pretty funny.

My Question; why don't people have the time to laugh a little?

Because it really gets old and it's a constant thing that happens on these forums. It's just not funny anymore. It's like why put the time in replying to someones post and not even help the OP.

I'm interested in research but plan on going into medicine. I've done research since sophomore year and I feel like, aside from teaching, it's one of the most productive/challenging things that you can do at this point in your career.

Research is moving toward disease focused investigations, so that should make it easier for you to be honest.

If this is your first attempt at trying to get into research, then my letter would be structured like this.

Hello Dr. so-so,

2-3 sentences on who you are, grade level, major, GPA, where your from, whatever

5 sentences on your passion for science/research in general, how you think their subject of study is crucial for the world, etc

3-4 sentences on your qualifications, and how it would be a privilege for you to work for them, and how much you would contribute to their lab if given the chance

Best regards,

you

Agreed. 👍

+1

It seems like every 'asking for advice thread' has a few of these...
