I made a thread stating my views on premed students and their asking "what are my chances" and wanted to open a discussion of whether it was the best approach to gaining acceptance into medical school. Not only was a GREATLY misunderstood but those who debated me took a gross oversimplification of my argument and in turn used that to segway into shaming tactics and ad hominem attacks.

I am very disappointed in this forum and the community as a whole. Not for disagreeing but for the groupthink dynamic and thought-crime policing I experienced. I used nothing but either standard English or civil language in the midst of being met with insults and being called names.

It has only been a month, and I have already had a thread of mine closed and I am sure it is because I presented a difference of opinion, not because I said anything offensive by a community standard.

Unfortunately, due to this I will exit this forum and the reason I am writing this is so that either a moderator will open a line of communication or I will just leave.

I have no need or desire to be a "troll", I joined this website to get tips on how to be a better student and consequently, doctor.

Trolls are those on the internet who try to start arguments or attempt to be inflammatory in order to get an emotional response to get attention or get their needs met.

I have no need to be offensive to others to get attention, however, I do love academic debate, challenging stereotypes, and breaking barriers.

If I desired to get attention, I am a beautiful woman I get plenty of attention when I walk outside my door everyday. I have no problem exiting the forum if a moderator sees fit. I wish all of you the best and I look forward to working with some of you in the future as physicians when I become one.

I read all the responses in your last thread, but I still think you missed the point as to why "What Are My Chances?" sub-forum is useful.

1. Actual members from medical schools admissions' offices post there.
2. It varies from post to post, but there is far more detail than just GPA and MCAT. They can include extracurricular activities, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, jobs, etc.
3. There are over 100+ medical schools. It can be overwhelming and confusing to pick which schools one should apply to!
4. Posting in WAMC can help you see what potential weak spots your application might have. That way you can help patch up those spots while you're applying or postpone applying for that cycle and come back stronger.
5. This process is very stressful. Some people find it cathartic to post there.

Just wanted to add that the thread was likely closed because it had devolved into people attacking you, not because you presented a different opinion

The reason people believe you are a troll is because you have repeatedly described yourself as gorgeous and suggested that your confidence will get you into medical school. There is a difference between confidence and arrogance and describing yourself as gorgeous and bragging about your IQ will always be interpreted as the latter.

If that is you in you avatar you should consider changing it to preserve anonymity. There are AdCom members on here and schools have openly said they check SDN applicants. Do you really want future admissions committees reading about how gorgeous you think you are and that the world gazes on you? Also, medical schools are professional schools, duck faces are the opposite of professional. Take this for what it's worth, but I think it's best to conduct yourself on here as you would do in an academic setting.

The moderators don't care whether you use SDN or not. They care when people make threads telling others what to post, or make threads to air personal grievances that don't matter to anyone else.
The internet is srs bsns

In my day, trolls were trolls. Trolls took their trolling seriously. You had to work to be a troll.

Awaiting banhammer!

Trolling used to be an art form. You became a troll because your father was a troll, and your father's father before him. Everything's gone to Hell since the decline of the unions in the 80s.

On your way out...Don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you.

OK .... this thread is getting out of control. Closing.

For clarification, I was the one who closed the original thread and did so without taking any action against the OP.

I did so because it was riling up the masses and was increasingly off topic. It was not personal and my warning to her included learning about a community and its standards before criticizing the members and the site.

That being said, our community could learn something in not calling "troll" right off the bat. Sitting back and observing sometimes yields more information which would be useful. SDN is often criticized for not being welcoming and the other thread is evidence of why we have that reputation. You don't have to be falsely encouraging (a la reddit) but we can take people at face value before labeling them as a troll.
