Technically speaking, hyperthyroidism does not cause exophthalmos. Graves Disease causes hyperthyroidism and autoimmune-mediated exophthalmos.

Hyperthyroidism can cause raising of the upper eyelid, but that's not exophthalmos.

Actually hyperthyroidism in and of itself does not cause lid retraction. You need to have thyroid eye disease (Graves' ophthalmopathy) for that too.

I don't think so. I'm talking about the effects of sympathetic overactivity: 1-2 mm elevation of the upper eyelid, and "lid lag".

These signs are largely due to excessive adrenergic stimulation and usually remit with successful treatment. I concur with jeebus. Lid lag & retraction in hyperthyroidism is due to sympathetic overactivity. Lid lad does not cause exophthalmos although the appearance of the upper margin of the eye in lid lad which is otherwise hidden can appear to be proptosis. You can have lid lag/retraction with or without exophthoamos
