Hey guys! Noob here. I decided that I wanted to go into optometry about half a year ago and have been working toward that goal ever since.
I've joined both the pre-optometry society at my university as well as another pre-optometry club where we preform free vision screenings and the like. I also quit doing research (since I realized I didn't want to do it for the rest of my life) and got a part-time job at an optometrist's office (mostly just clerical-related stuff).
I was going to start volunteering for an ophthalmologist at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, but with summer classes and my job, I haven't really gotten around to doing that. Also, I'm going to be joining my school's student alumni association and will be volunteering/working in the office of the internal vice president of the undergraduate student council this upcoming school year, so I'm not even sure if I have time to do all of that plus volunteering.
My question is this: do you guys think that the current experience I have now (keeping in mind that I have yet to take my OAT/shadow optometrists and will probably be applying to optometry school next summer, and will hopefully have officer status in at least one of the pre-opt clubs by that time) will be "enough" for a school like Berkeley/SCCO? My pre-req GPA isn't too great, something like a 3.4 for Berkeley/3.45 for SCCO (and I'm almost done with my pre-reqs so I really don't have much time to raise that). Optometry schools like diversity, right? I figured I'd do something like working in student council rather than volunteering at Jules Stein because it would help me be more well-rounded (plus it's just something I've always been interested in).
Anyway, yeah. I'm just kind of worried that I have the opportunity to volunteer there and yet I'm opting to do something else instead.
Thanks guys!
