I am going to be starting at the University of Melbourne vet course this year.
The last two years of the course are clinics.
University of Sydney and University of Melbourne are both 5 year degree's. In University of Melbourne the first year you are in the Science faculty so you don't really have any contact with animals, whereas Sydney has those basic first year classes as well as some animal classes in the first year.
As an American student who has already done a degree you get to skip the first year of the Melbourne course so it becomes a 4 year course, whereas in Sydney I think you only get to skip some classes in the first year (so you would have to be in Australia for 5 years for Sydney as opposed to 4 years for Melbourne).
The Australian degree's are very general degree's, so there isn't really any benefit in going to one over the other.
