I went to a few ODs in my area, 2 of them agreed to let me "shadow" them. I asked if i can work there but they said theres nothing i can do other than be a receptionist. Where can i find work other than a receptionist job, like interacting with the patients and optometrists? i heard of a pre-optometry internship, what is that? is there such a thing as a pre-optometry internship?is it the same as shadowing?

thanks! This forum has been a great help!

Sometimes it is difficult for an OD to find a short term job for someone besides just answering the phone. By the time you are trained enough to be independent as an optometric tech or optician, you would probably be done working there. Also, unless the OD is looking for more help w/ the patients, they really don't need more people helping in the exam room. As far as adding a receptionist, there is always billing, recalls, and filling to do...at least thats my experience.

So be a receptionist, thats a start. Actually, thats how I started. It's more that you have right now . . . right? Get your foot in the door by impressing him with how well you work.

that's how i started, too. There's way more to being an OD than just seeing patients. You're going to need to know how the WHOLE OFFICE works. Start as a receptionist.. learn how the process works, learn to bill insurance (TRUST ME THIS IS IMPORTANT!) , watch the opticians when you're not busy and learn from them (like how to adjust, repair and use a lensometer)... ask the OD to get you when he seems something extra interesting. Don't lose any opporunity to learn if this is what you're passionate about doing. You'll have a leg up on your classmate if you can make the most of this experience. Go for it !!

Alright I'll go for it! receptionist it is!

thanks all for all your help
