I am writing an update letter (pre II) and was considering mentioning that I am very interested in the school due to personal reasons (location of SO, although she has no ties ). is this weird bc it is not related to my update?

gonna be honest...it won't do anything. Unless you're married (and even then it wont really work) schools don't care...Unless you're a resident of the state and the school is a public one that has a mission to accept in state applicants (like Texas). Other than that, the school knows youre interested by the fact you applied

I think it's fine to mention, but make the comment more generic, like, "An important part of my social support system lives nearby," or some such.

I don't know how much it'll help. If it's U Michigan they have plenty of qualified candidates.
