Hello Everyone,

After contacting several programs concerning an OMS externship It is now time to get my CV organized. I would like to get any tips or advice that any of you would like to share. As of right now I basically have a regular resume that IM trying to modify to correlate to my interests in oral surgery. Trying to think of a good career objective statement as well.

IM very excited about hopefully being selected into one of these programs just to see what its like to live the life of an OMS during a trauma call, extraction procedure, and all of the other surgerys that that they are involved in. Hope to hear from you soon, bye

I was fortunate to be accepted to a month-long OMFS externship this upcoming summer at LSUHSC in New Orleans. In my journey in searching of an OMFS externship, CV is usually not required. Even with that said, CV IS strongly recommended when you seek letter of recommendations from faculty, surgeons, Deans and/or OMFS Dept. Chairs.

I'd be glad to share my CV with you if you would like to sample it. Also, a website that I used as a reference in making my CV is this:

Good luck and let me know if you still would like to see mine.

Andy

Congratulations on your 1 month Externship! That sounds very exciting enough to keep me up at night

I would really like to get an idea of what your CV looks like. Can you please PM me with your CV and any other info that helped you along the way? Thanks!

If I get selected for an externship we will definately have to share our experiences.

That's exciting. Be sure to ask if its possible to stay in the call room instead of a hotel. It's a lot cheaper and you get max exposure to the program and the residents. The best way to make a good impression is by being a hard worker. Don't wait to be asked to do something. Be the one to see the first and the last patient in clinic. ALWAYS be the last person to finish scrubbing. Be humble. Rember that as much as you think you know about oms, it will not impress anyone. Have fun and learn as much as you can. Finally, ask the residents which programs that think are good. Between about 10 or 12 residents, they've probably externed and interviewed at about half the programs out there. Have fun and learn a lot.

Amen omsres, nothing worse than a know it all extern

Omsres:

Those sound like some good tips. If selected for an externship I plan on keeping my mouth closed and ears open. I am a very hard worker and a quick learner.

I just want to get some exposure to the following during an OMS externship:

Extractions/suturing
Injections
Orthognathic surgery
Implants
Trauma
Lifestyle the residents carryout day by day

If I can get some exposure in each of these areas my goal will be fufilled. From what I have been told I will be asked to do the same tasks as the residents and to me that is more than anyone could ever ask for! IM very excited at this point but still have no word yet. So for now IM going to look into some more programs just to better my chances of being selected.

Give me your email, I'll email it to you.

OMSRES:

Thanks for the tip! I'm so glad that we have several of you, OMS residents (PGY1, PGY2), on SDN now. Back 2 years ago, there were none of you on here.

Back to Pharm studies.
