I'm planning some externships for the M4 year and I'm toying with the idea of arranging an observership by contacting an attending directly. Somehow I think I would get more attention if there is one attending that's "supposed" to be responsible for me. The other option is the traditional externship applications that various med school post on their admissions websites.
I'm a little concerned that it's too easy to get ignored by being thrown into the lot with too many other students coming from more name-brand schools.
On the other hand, I'm concerned that by arranging something directly with an attending may be misconstrued as an attempt to gain an unfair advantage over other medical students though I'm not sure if anyone actually cares.
Anyone have any thoughts?
