I am still a little confused over externships. I know each school has a list of sites available to choose from but are the ones they have listed the only ones you can pick from or can you try to get one in the city you desire? I forgot to ask that during my visits.

At SCO, it is very difficult to get new sites added. The director of externships must visit each site before it is added and it is added with the intention of being an available site for many years to come. We just got a new director so he's trying to get some more sites in areas that are highly desired by the students but if it's an area that one student every couple of years shows interest in, chances are slim to none that it will ever become a site. Also, if you look online at our sites, I know they are not up-to-date..hopefully this new director will update it soon!

What makes a good site?

It is difficult to nearly impossible to get sites added at most schools. They have contracts to fill seats at certain places... so having you go somewhere else means there's one less place with a warm body.

PUCO has struggled with this. They have more externship locations than they have students, therefore, sometimes the site goes unfilled. This has led to some sites no longer wanting to be a site - because they don't know if they will have a student each quarter or not. I'm not sure how they have gone about changing things, if at all. It was good for students because you had a wide variety of choices and could set up your own site but a huge headache for the faculty/staff.

ICO told me that it's not possible to set up an externship of your own in Europe because the clinical education that you receive at ICO would be "far superior" to what you would experience in Europe....

I don't know of anyone at SUNY who has set up his/her own externship. For the reasons mentioned above, setting up externship sites and making sure all of the spots are filled each quarter is a pain in the butt, so the roster of sites does not change very often.

It was difficult to get sites added at ICO until this last year. We had the same problem of having to many sites and not enough students. Over the last year they dropped a lot of sites that were sub par and are now adding new ones in places of interest. There are about 15 students in my class from Wisconsin and we had no sites after they cut the one we did have. So it was actually very easy from me to set up two new sites for the school and I will be the first student to go through them. In a way that will be great, b/c they will have no bar to compare me.

In a nut shell, I think we are all saying it depends on the school and if they need more sites.
