Hi guys,
I'm an ms2 and I was just wondering about the importance of extra curricular/community service to get into radiology. And what kind are the rad residencies looking for and when do you do them. I did a summer research and intramural sports but not much else. i'd really appreciate your advice.
Thanks a lot ! 🙂

Any program will at least look at anything you can convince them that you took seriously.

That is, if you can convey that your research was something you really worked hard at and got something out of (like a publication), then that's a plus. If you can demonstrate in some meaningful way the fact that you were some kind of leader in intramural sports (organizer or captain or whatever), then that could be a plus.

Basically, programs are looking for smart people who can do the work and whom they will like having around for four years. Different programs put different emphasis on different parts of that equation, and different people at the programs will accept different kinds of experiences as evidence of these traits. If you're serious about applying to rads (or anything else competitive), you just have to think about how you present yourself and what you've done so that those qualities are apparent.

Good luck.

(BTW, if you're starting to think stategy about getting a residency, read Iserson's Getting into a Residency. Easy read, and very helpful, no matter what you're going to go into.)
