well is it just me or does your ec, volunteer, work, research section of application seem super empty.? I looked at my friend's resume as a reference (she graduated from b-school) and I thought I had good amount of EC's but
it just seems very inadequate. ( 6 or 7 on EC, 2 work experiences, 5 honors/scholarship crap, 1 research exp (can't believe such commitment needs to be summed up in 175 characters, including spaces)
and 1 dentistry exp)
what's enough for dental school admission in terms of ECs? DO I need to
really beef up my resume like trying to come up with more things?
jeez.

Don't make anything up!
Just put down what you have (it all sounds good to me) and cross your fingers. they want to see that you're involved.
The #1 thing is gpa & DAT. The other things spice it up. I had 2 dental expericances 2 awards and 6 service/activities. Viola!

Yeah I don't really have much going on in that section myself. I am non-traditional heavy-course-load/work-full-time applicant. I think that there is one of two explanations as to why a person would have a ton of EC's on their application.

1. They have mommy & daddy pay for everything so they do not need a job, thus have TONS of free time on their hands.

2. They are completely bull****ing. I would be willing to bet that the number of applicants that does this is in the double digits. The said thing is, honest people like me and you look like we are slackers. I wish they had a random auditing system at every d-school to verify all the data provided on an application. If applicants knew they checked, I would be willing to bet schools would see a lot less EC's for applicants.

Whoa,

If only you knew the HALF of it. Many of my friends got screwed b/c of the incredible number of people that exaggerate on their applications.

Doing 6 months of research, averaging 10 hours per week is NO JOKE. IT IS A HUUUUUUUGE Time committment.
Someone in my fraternity got one year of research with 10 hours of week on his app OVERNIGHT, how? B/c he had good connections!!
This is just one example from thousands! especially at extrememly competitive schools. I mean, just look at Barry Bonds...i'm sure tons of players juice it just to keep up. It's shame, but a reality. One can only hope that Adcoms can see through their garbage but they don't. They CAN'T.

Another example, RUNNING A CLUB ON CAMPUS...being elected president, organizing meetings....speakers...events...competitions...Takes an enormous toll on one's school work. Unfortunately I know many that make fake clubs on campus and give each other leadership positions and exaggerate their responsiblities and commmittments on their apps..

Another: Students that CHEAT!!! you would think it would catch up with them but I know scores of people in dental school (NYU TEMPLE TUFTS BU) that are PROFESSIONAL cheaters, and got away with amazing feats at UCLA.

This takes a lot away from those who actually work hard!
I feel your pain. I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!

i completely agree, the problem ihave with the application is they do not ask for contact numbers for employment, dentists, ANYTHING, it is very easy for ppl to make stuff up, i hope they ask me for contact information cuz i have so much stuff on EC besides 10 hours of shadowing/dental assistant a week 20 hours of employment a week in all 4 years of college excluding club activities, and 4 research projects...that is my biggest problem with the applications they should know that ppl lack integrity from the recent cheating scandals its upseting when you show REAL commitment towards things and others can just imitate it on paper!!!!!!!!!!!

I know in Canada they have that for med schools... but from what I hear, it's a pain to verify 40+ extra curriculars...

for ohio state this year you have to verify your volunteer and your shadowing with these sheets you have to send in before you can even get an interview.

Finally a great idea. I wish other schools would follow THE Ohio State University's example!
