I'm going to be entering a DO program in the Fall. I want to be as competitive as possible when it comes time to apply for residency.
Besides good grades, and a good step1 score, what activities should I do.
Where and how should I do research?
What extracurricular activities should I do?

You'll probably get better answers if you ask these questions in the Osteopathic medical student forum, not pre-med.

Pump the brakes, man. Get settled into your first semester and make sure school isn't going to rock your socks off. Then once you've got your sea legs...ECs.

Your school will have more clubs than you could ever possibly want. Join one or two and get involved--not 6 or 7 just to be in the facebook group.
Research: Creep your school's professor bios on the school webpage to see what kind of research they do. My school has a presentation every semester about research opportunities on campus.

What type of research opportunities are available at your DO school, basic science (bench), clinical or case reports?

My school is a unique situation because we mostly only have basic science faculty on campus so that's what it is here. If you want to do clinical research you might have luck at a school w/ more clinical faculty on site. I don't know though and can't really speak to that. There are supposed to be a lot of new vacancies in HIV/AIDS research you could maybe work your way into.

Do something to keep yourself somewhat physically active, too.

The only thing available at my school, for the most part, was bench research, which is time intensive and probably not worth it unless you like that kind of research. Clinical research is much easier and quicker.

I'd recommend doing a summer research internship, like http://www.mskcc.org/education/students/summer-fellowship, between ms1 and ms2.

Board scores are, by far, the most important thing on your application. LORs can help a lot too, but they need to be exceptional or from noteworthy people and most DO students do not have the opportunity to work with those type of people.
