Hi All, I am in the middle of taking my prerequisites . I have taken 5 classes so far . I have 4 A's and one F. The reason I got A was my overseas travel and I could not withdraw before deadline and college gave me F . I am going to retake this class and the grade will replace F but F will still show up on transcript. I wanted to know how does Adcom folks will view one F. and how can I reduce the negative impact of this one bad grade.

Cheers!!!

Well, I got accepted with three old F's in statistics, anthropological debates and astronomy lab. That last one sure makes me feel dumb--how did I ever manage to fail at stargazing? I retook statistics. The retake was fewer credits so it didn't count towards DO grade replacement, but nobody seemed to mind. Although DO schools will allow grade replacement, a recent F will still be a problem since it will still appear on your transcripts. The best way to reduce the impact of this is to retake the class as you've planned and get an A. It isn't ideal, but then nobody on the nontrad forum had ideal applications. Do the retake, apply as planned to schools in your GPA and MCAT range, and see what happens. Be prepared to address the issue in interviews and have a good answer ready.

thanks..I do have a solid reason for my F grade. As I mentioned in my original post , I was out of country for some personal reasons hence missed the deadline to pull out my name from class . In addition to that I did not take even a single exam so 'F' given to me was just a BS..🙁 or you can say school sticking to its stinking rule and regulations..

You mean the BS and the stinking rules and regulations that ARE PART OF LIFE? Figure out how to cope with that BS, and figure out how to follow rules or regulations, or pick another career. Seriously. Ask a doctor how much "BS" and how many "stinking" rules and regulations they have to follow. Stop complaining and take responsibility for your actions.

If you have a legitimate reason for leaving the country(i.e. illness or death in family), most schools are able to provide a retroactive withdrawal so you could have a W instead of an F. I'd exhaust all resources at the school first. If you've already done that, good luck.

Thanks for the response. I had to go out of the country in the following semester as well because of some personal reasons. So I approached school about this after 2 semesters and they declined my request (even when I scored the highest in all other science classes) .But my original question is still unanswered, how would it affect my admission chances. If I get A's and B's in rest of the prerequisites and get 35+ in MCAT, will admission guys ignore my one 'F' grade ?

They will look at it. All grades are taken into consideration. It will affect your GPA. No one can tell you whether or not you will be rejected due to this though. Each school is different in what they are willing to let pass. The best thing you can do is have a strong reason for why this happened and state your case well. I have heard from many students that they have had bad semesters yet still apply, the outcome of acceptance is different for each individual.

It's so nice and easy to say you'll get a 35+ on the MCAT, isn't it? The reason nobody is giving you a straight answer about this is because you don't know how to live in reality. Nobody can tell you how an individual grade will fare at each school in the nation given the many other factors at play. How about you'll just find out when you apply? That's as honest of an answer as you'll get. Also, consider taking some responsibility, since you were the one that signed up and agreed to your school's rules. If they didn't give you deferment or something, chances are they didn't consider your reason legitimate; very rare for that to happen if it was legitimate.
