I graduated from a good college and did decently enough. After graduating, I got an associates from an interior design school and failed one of my classes there. I got very sick at the end of the semester and provided my school with a note from the doctor treating me. However, they failed me anyway (it was a small school so they didn't follow the generally accepted guidelines of giving out an incomplete). I was too sick to fight it at the time and I thought I would never be applying to another school again so my grades wouldn't matter. Now I am considering applying to dental school and I am stuck with an F on my transcript for an Interior Design course of all things. Is this going to completely sink my chances of getting into dental school? Is there a way to avoid providing dental schools with my transcript from Interior design school since it was basically a vocational school?

Your character is already in question. Accept responsibility for your grades. Bad grades can be explained; being dishonest cannot.

I don't know about your school but in mine you can drop a class retroactively (if you got a bad grade) if you were really sick. Talk to the Division of Student Affairs and even to the Ombudsman if necessary to see if can be fixed. If not, then don't worry many people have gotten F's and are dentists now.

can't you just attach note with it ? or send the note your doctor wrote for you.

my tip is yes try to find way to avoid showing them that F. but don't use lies. if you can't find any honest way than just tell them.

easy killer.

I don't think dental school is out. I don't think adcoms care what you got in your interior design classes, as long as you do very well in your pre-reqs. Your best answer though, will come from calling the dental schools you want to attend.

Sounds totally different when I read it again. Like I said, adcom are people too; they understand students are not perfect, and I think it shows more of you character to explain something if it comes up; I wouldn't bring it up in my interview but I would have an explanation ready just in case.

I actually had some F's and explained it to there liking, and I was accepted to multiple schools.

I really am particular about honesty; I think its super important to be honest in life. And it goes to the mind frame that dental schools are looking for. I made a bad grade, and in my mind I was thinking, "How can I make them understand I made a mistake." The OP is thinking, "How can I hide this from them." My interview was loaded with unexpected ethics question, and to have a good foundation helped to answer quickly and cogently.

Fudging the line here and there, eventually there is no line. That's what Confucius said, lol.

You must submit all grades from any post-secondary school you attend. I would not try to hide this from the schools if were in your shoes.

I would be very surprised if a single failed class in interior design school would keep you out of dental school. Make the rest of your app strong, especially the DAT and your science GPA.

I received a failing grade in my first go of a prerequisite science class and got into several schools just fine. Be prepared to explain any shortcomings you have at your interviews, but do not bring the topic up if they do not specifically mention it.

no dental school in it's right mind is going to judge an applicant based on a single performance in a single class.

what matters the most is ur OVERALL performance (GPA, science GPA, DAT scores, etc)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i got a 19 on my dat (AA) and a overall science of 20 with a 17 Pat gpa is a 3.6 and my science gpa is a 3.5 what are my chances of getting in im applying in june

Please stop resurrecting old threads and asking for your chances. If you'd like some feedback on your application, make ONE thread including your GPAs (broken down in oGPA, sGPA, and BCP GPA), your DAT breakdown, your work/dental related experience (including shadowing/volunteering hours), and anything else you think you might put in your application. Otherwise, you'll likely get ignored or flamed with these resurrections of old threads with a truncated description of yourself as an applicant.
