Someone Please HELP re: FAFSA

Hi I never have done a fafsa – not for undergrad either and now my med school called me this morning and asked me why I haven’t don it and that I should! Is it mandatory to do a fafsa –my school starts august 4th and my tuition is due that week – do I have to hurry and get the fafsa processed before I attend school? I thought a fafsa doesn’t do anything but give you loan info? Do you need it for scholarships?

I guess it would depend on the scholarship, but most schools require any one that wishes to receive aid of any form (loans, grants, scholarships, etc.) to complete the FAFSA.

Most students need to fill out fafsa because they need loans or other scholarships offered thru fafsa. If your scholarship is independent of fafsa (federal loan & financial aid program) then you are fine. Also, applies if you are able to pay everything out of pocket after your scholarship funds for school expenses. However, it never hurts to fill out a fafsa application in case your funds are insufficient. At least that's my understanding.

My boyfriend did not sign up for selective service before he was 26, and thus was not eligible for federal financial aid. He pays everything out of pocket and never fills out fafsa. Fortunately, his parents can afford it.
