failed a college class can i get into DO program
Started by tubocurare
someone i know failed a college spanish class but otherwise has excellent MCAT, science GPA, letters, volunteer/work exp. is the "F" a goal killer. any advice??
doubt its a deal breaker since its spanish..
I don't see why you, errr I mean your friend can't get into an MD program if that is the route you want to go as long as the GPA is still solid. An "F" in anything isn't the end of the world, it just matters how hard one wants to work to improve it, either by retake or by smoking upper division science courses
AACOMAS replaces repeat grades instead of averaging them. Retake the class, get an A, and all is forgiven.
In my undergrad Organic Chem I class, only 3 students bothered to show up for the final exam because everyone else in the class was guaranteed an F for the course. I was not one of the lucky 3. (Speaking of lucky 3, the instructor killed himself 3 weeks after the course ended.)
Anyway, I retook the course the next semester, got an A, it totally replaced my F, and I was admitted to ATSU-SOMA three (3!) months later.

your professor committed suicide? O___O. how come?
Bluto Blutarski failed all his classes, and his GPA was 0.0, and he was pre-med. I don't know if he got into a DO school or not though. Also, he isn't real.
Yes, AACOMAS replaces the grade if you retake the class. I know someone who failed an English class, but retook it and got an "A". He then also failed a MCB class, retook it as well and got a "B". In the end, he still got into several DO schools. He's GPA was around 3.4, MCAT 28.

If I recall correctly, he became a pirate.

Yes you can as long as you repeat it. My GPA was slaughtered on the AMCAS and PharmCAS system because they average in repeated classes, where AACOMAS doesn't average but replaces the low grade with the higher grade.
I think it is punishment enough that you have to waste money to retake the class, but to have your GPA slaughtered even after paying the price is just not fair.

3 F's from freshman year (was focused on football not grades). Accepted to 4 schools this year. It can be done, be prepared to answer for it in the interveiws though. I would imagine that it is also easier to explain if it was early in your/their college career.
It's not a matter of being fair or not. It's just the way that nature creates DOs.I think it is punishment enough that you have to waste money to retake the class, but to have your GPA slaughtered even after paying the price is just not fair.
