Hi guys I just received my score back a couple days ago. I failed Usmle ck by only a couple of points. I also have a low score on usmle step 1. My question is should I pursue medical? What are my chances of getting residency here in the states (citizen)?
Shall I do PA school or MPH or research?
Or shall I re-attempt ck once more and hope for the best?

im sorry to hear that my friend :c

just my two cents:
1) if u are a US citizen at a US medical school (MD/DO) u still have a very very strong chance of matching. (n=1) but i know several AMG that were in similar situations and are now in residencies. Granted you are looking strictly at primary care specialties in community hospitals, but those are just as important as sub-specialties.
2) if u are either a carribean or FMG I would consider this the end of trying to match into the US and look at alternate routes.

best of luck 🙂

Hello I can't believe I left out this crucial information, I'm actually an IMG/FMG graduate of 2012. I'm worried about this red flag blaring during my application to residencies.
I actually wanted feedback as to whether or not I should take the exam again, is it worth it? My chances of matching are slim to none now...
How many IMG with a low or failing score have matched into residencies here in USA?

For better help you need to provide more information:
1) Are you a US citizen?
2) Are you a graduate from a carribean medical school or from a reputable foreign medical school.
2) What have you been doing since you graduated
3) Are you currently practicing in another country
4) etc

i am not an img/fmg so i can't give the most accurate information, but to my understanding: a failure is a major red flag.
you have maybe 1 more chance at taking the CK, but you need to absolutely kick butt on it. Also, it is to my understanding that FMG/IMGs need to have a step 3 as well.
You may want to look into pre-residency fellowships as a bridge into residency, but I am not sure how these things work nor do i know anyone that's done one. I just know they exist.

IMO you are at a crossroads, spend the next several years attempting to get into a US residency or be content with whichever country you are from and practice medicine there.

1. Yes
2. Very respectable and reputable medical school in Asia...tough to get into, even tougher to stay in
3. Honestly just being a homemaker and reading raising my kid. Have been volunteering here and there.
4. No I've been in the states ever since I graduated.

It's not necessary to give step 3 for IMG/FMG either, but with such an alarming red flag it certainly couldn't hurt!
I'm tee tottering between attempting it again and playing my cards right or giving up altogether and going to PA school.

You might have a shot at family medicine some places. Although some programs will only look at applicants who have passed everything the first time around.

(And btw I'm not disdaining family medicine. Now that I'm finishing med school I'm most interested in going into FM and I have 260s on the Steps).

Wow you have an amazing score! Good job! Thank you I really appreciate your honesty. Guess I should hit the books again.
