Just found out that I failed surgery shelf. It is my first clerkship so I have no clue how to study. I passed step 1 without much difficulty though not that long ago.
I used the normal stuff that people on SDN recommend. I read Pestana x 2. Watched OME surgery videos. Did all UWorld surgery questions and GI/pulm/renal questions. I had a crazy amount of questions on my shelf on surgical subspecialties and pure anatomy.
My school allows me to retake the shelf. I really appreciate advice on how to pass the surgery shelf. Should I take it soon or wait till I have medicine clerkship? I have a feeling my medicine foundation is really weak. What (other) materials should I use?? Since my current materials were not enough for me to pass the shelf.
Thank you so much!

Sorry to hear about your situation.
I did devirgilio for gi, breast ,and trauma topics, Pestana2x, Emma Holiday x1.5.

You can definitely pass if you understand the concept in those.

Definitely know the shocks' presentation, when to intubate, nutrition stuff, and some ortho and nerve innervation.

I'll also study vascular stuff and don't forget the heart murmurs and heart diseases. Endocrine stuff also shows up especially adrenal insufficiency.

Edit:also don't forget clotting cascade and bleeding related disorders

I honored surgery with just devirgilio + uworld surgery questions. I think the IM stuff is quite overstated. I didn’t do a single IM question on surgery and felt like the test asked primarily surgical questions. I think the IM stuff is more of a distraction on the test honestly.

Pestana is worthless for the shelf as well, that was just for you to get an overall view of surgery on the rotation. What you need to do is really NAIL the full devirgilio book. I’m not sure what your timeline is like, but the vascular, trauma, endo sections are high yield (and some other sections I’m probably forgetting). I mean the whole book is pretty dang high yield. I would focus on the devirgilio book and do every question it has after you read it (or after you finish a section).
