I just got a letter in the mail saying that I failed surgery.😡 😡 😡

I dont even know if I failed the written or the performance part, but never had any complaints during the rotation, so I can only assume that I failed the test.

My school has a policy that I can simply retake the test and pass (hopefully) and continue 3rd year.

My questions are these.

How many people fail the clerkship exams?

Do most pass the 2nd time around?

What effect does it have on your chances for residency? (I plan on either EM or IM)

Needless to say, I was both pissed and upset when I found out.

thanks for helping a bro out.

Hey bro,

I know a dude that failed surgery and he got the EM residency of his choice.. in NYC..

So don't worry, I'm assuming your in your 3rd year right now.. just kick ass on the rest of your rotations especially medicine and ob-gyn.. since those are the other rotations that EM is big on and of course your EM elective in your 4th year (which is by far the most important factor)..

More words of encouragement.. I almost failed my surgery boards and I ended up on getting a pass in surgery and now I have more than enough EM interviews lined up..

chin up dude..

Thanks for the encouragement. Thats cool that he got a place in NYC.

Hopefully It'll work out in the end anyways.😉 Still kinda sucks though.....

I've heard that most people who want EM will get it, just maybe not their top 3 choices. Heres hoping.

I know someone who failed his surgery rotation and still matched into an average surgery program.

Hopefully you can approach your surgery chair and discuss what broke down. I think most people have problem with the written.

Do a surgical specialty rotation your fourth year so you can prove that it was a fluke!
