I just received my scores and got a 441 on comlex level 1 but only a 167 on usmle. Should I take usmle again? What actions should I take for getting a residency and what specialties am I most likely still eligible for? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks so much everyone!

As a DO student, you still can match into AOA programs... I don't think you should waste your time taking USMLE step 1 again; not sure how much it will help for AGCME programs even if you got 220+ on your second attempt.

Ya I definitely don't want to waste anymore time with it. But because I passed Comlex I'm now in rotations so I'm not sure when I would have time to study and take it again anyway. I was under the impression that D.O. students can only match into AGCME programs starting in 2018, which is when I'll be applying. Will there still be AOA programs to match into then? Assuming that I do have to go through AGCME would it look better to take it again and pass rather than having 1 fail and no reattempts? Thanks so much for your input!

I was under the impression it will be in 2020... I think there is a thread on the DO forum about the merger. Check it out! You are applying next year for 2018, so it's very unlikely the merger will be underway next year.

Ok great! Thanks so much for your help! Do you know by chance which programs I might still have a shot at with a 441?

OP, would you care to explain what happened? Did you not prepare well? Which DO program did you attend? (if it is too personal, you may private message me).

As a first year DO student, this does worry me as well and would appreciate any advice as to what you would have done differently.

I believe for the 2018 match you'll still have the separated match. I'll be honest though, 162 is low and even before starting dedicated period I would worry about passing. I would honestly just follow other's advice and apply only for AOA programs. I take it you're in 3rd year and to raise your score to adequate levels is an arduous task that may not be worth it or even possible with your schedule (50+ jump in scores is a monumental task).

Did you do any NBME practice tests? It would've been better to not have taken it at all if your scores were that low.

the unified ACGME system will mean that Osteopathic programs will become ACGME programs( still overseen by AOA and the ACGME by a joint accreditor). There will still be Osteopathic distinctive ACGME residencies. COMLEX and USMLE scores will be accepted by hopefully all residencies by the time you are interviewing. you should be talking with your advisors about your scores and what to do about rotations.
