So this last semester I, unfortunately, failed my calculus class. I know the effect it will have on my GPA and such but I was wondering about retaking the class. At the college I attend in order to retake a class you need to crash the class. This is almost impossible due to recent class cuts and sizes. I was wondering if retaking the class at a community college would be looked down upon in my application to medical schools.

Yes, retaking at community college will be looked down upon, especially since you failed the first time at a more reputable school.

How much that will hurt you really depends on the school, who's looking at your transcript, what they ate for breakfast that day, whether you're at the top of the pile that morning or at the bottom in the afternoon....basically no one knows how much it will hurt your chances, but it certainly won't help.

DO schools will offer "grade replacement" wherein only the most current attempt counts toward your GPA. MD schools will not. Retaking the class will be required by most schools to prove proficiency in calculus (a pre-requisite), but it won't fix the mistake you made the first time around.

Really there is no way to cover it up, but if it affected your GPA too badly, I would go D.O. and do the grade replacement thing they offer. However, that means you will have to take calculus again.

I would not assume that OP is doomed forever to DO just because of one F. DO's fine if that's what OP wants, but you don't have to completely give up on MD. People are able to pick up from an F and still get an MD acceptance. You're going to have to retake the class regardless. The question is where. Realize you made a mistake, own up to it, retake the class preferably at a 4 year institution, and maintain a near 4.0 in all of your upper division coursework, and in the end you can still hold an MD acceptance.

If an individual gets an "F," they are more likely than not not going 4.0 the rest of their college career. It's possible, but unlikely. An F is 0.5 quality points = major GPA torpedo

True. I just hate the SDN trend of sees one thing wrong in someone's course history --> OP, be happy with DO, all MD chances are gone --> Attack when anyone suggests that OP might prefer MD.

We don't know what happened, maybe this F was a fluke. Probably not, but things happen.

A F at my school = 0 quality points.

I'm not giving up on a n MD acceptance because I messed up in one class. My GPA is still around or above the average for most MD schools. I just wanted to know how bad retaking a pre requisite at a CC would look since it is difficult to get classes at the university I go to.

Glad to hear you aren't giving up. If you really wanna put yourself in the most advantageous spot towards gaining that MD acceptance, definitely do everything in your power to retaking that class at the SAME university. I feel like if MD and DO schools see that you took it at a CC, they're gonna think you tried taking the easy way out and may question your ability
