If you are applying this year, and will be taking classes this fall, will medical school take in your fall grades when they come out?
Will the fall grades help you land an interview if you do well in them?

if you apply early you could be accepted well before the end of the fall semester. They start interviewing in august and september with most schools giving out acceptances shortly after (THis is DO schools im talking about). In these cases, your fall grades wont help you and they wont hurt you unless you fail everything. Even for MD schools they give out the first acceptances starting mid october, which is still well before the end of fall semester. So to answer your question, dont count on your fall GPA to be a significnat factor in the admissions process. Its not going to be. Unless of course you wait to apply until after you graduate college (aka you are taking a year or more off). Schools will see your fall and spring grades eventually b/c you will need to send in a final transcript, especially if you are still completing some pre reqs. But this is just so they can see you met their requirements and not really to evaluate your GPA.

Now if you apply really late, then maybe you cuold get your fall grades in there. But this isnt very smart b/c the consequences of applying that late far outweigh whatever benefit would come from your fall GPA.

thank you so much for your response, but I just called some osteopathic school and they told me something different. Once they receive your fall of 09, they will update you grades and will also use the fall of 09 transcript to help decide if you get interview or not. Therefore, the fall grades are equally important 🙂. I may not be hundred percent sure cuz i only called a couple of osteopathic schools. This maynot be the case of all the schools.
Atleast we are informed 🙂

Maybe one or two schools. Definitely not the norm. None of the schools I applied to knew my grades for fall or spring semester (except for the school I am going to because i sent in a final transcript in like June). They knew what classes I was taking because I put them in on AMCAS/AACOMAS, but no one ever asked what my grades were and I never told.

Like I said, if you apply late enough in the year where your fall semester will be over, then sure you might send them in. However, if you apply in June or even in the summer some time, then most schools will have made a decision on your application WELL before december when you get your fall grades. I was getting interview invites in early august (and rejections as well)...I heard the post interview decision from my first school in mid-september. All of my interviews were before the fall semester ended, and so were all of my acceptances/rejections. My latest/last interview that I went to was at the end of October and i received notification of my status from that school at the beginning of december, still well before fall grades came out. The reality of it is that ONE semester of grades is not going to make a big difference on your GPA, and most schools dont really care as long as you arent failing anything.
