I've noticed with increased use of face book during my summer vacation that a lot of people really tend to exaggerate their jobs and majors......for instance......a friend of mine posted a status a few weeks ago saying "I just had my first day as a biomedical research technician". He's doing research in a fly lab at our school. Seems like he may be talking himself up a bit. Another kid lists his course of study as "pre-veterinary medicine" I don't need to explain why that is misleading.

Isn't this weird?

Any of you come across similar things?

To be honest, those two things don't sound weird at all. Pre-vet medicine isn't that unusual to say. And have you every seen someone write on a resume that he/she is "doing research at a fly lab." His description may sound a little more boastful, but it's probably accurate nonetheless.

I know someone who says on facebook that he's a radiologist, when in reality he's going to school to become a rad tech.
I don't blame him or anything, as I don't think he's aware that it's a misnomer...😕

One time..I listed my employment as CEO of a certain company. But really I just opened a lemonade stand on my apartment street corner.

if he's not a research tech, then what is he? how is pre-veterinary medicine misleading? your obsession with your friends' "lies" is more weird.

exactly. I find that completely fine. If you do research in a biomedical lab, than you probably are a lab tech ie... biomedical lab tech.

So where are these "false jobs" you referred to in the title? Sounds like a legit pre-professional track (even if unofficial) and a legit UG-level job to me.

I personally don't care what janitors and custodians call themselves as long the job gets done and I don't have to do it. 😉
I was referring more to garbage-truck-type sanitation workers, but I totally agree. I have such appreciation for the people that keep our cities/buildings/schools clean.

I hate when newly grads who start a business and give themselves the title of CEO.

I was giving this one guy **** about it who started a "media firm" and was like "Oh, so you're a CEO huh? When did your company start getting publicly traded?" :meanie:

my cousin's annoying wife begged and begged my aunt and uncle to buy them a 2nd house... once they relented and bought one she goes on and on about the "investment property WE purchased" all the time on facebook. It is aggravating because she is so boastful while I know she is flat-out lying.

I am always wanting to comment, "oh, you mean the house you had your husband's parents, who are 74 years old, buy for you guys because you're so in debt and couldn't ever get a mortgage?" But, I would never post that.

She also always brags about his parent's lake house as "their vacation home." ... when really it's for all the kids to share.

Anyways... I think it's just natural for people to want to brag about dumb stuff on facebook. One of my co-workers who was doing pre-reqs at a community college had in her profile that she was a PA student at Stanford. 🙄

Even though it may be slightly irritating, I have to agree with this post. Was it really that irritating to you (OP) that you had to make a post on here about it? My suggestion would be to stop obsessing over facebook. People are full of it. Get off of facebook and do something productive.

you guys are reading into it way too much. I simply noticed a trend in the way people describe what they do and decided to comment on it to see if anyone noticed the same thing. Not a big deal at all.
