I'm entering NYUCD this fall, and was wondering if anyone could advise me in a good place to live near campus. I have a wife and a toddler, so we're looking at a reasonnably priced 1 or 2 bedroom apt (as reasonnable as Manhattan will allow, I guess 😕 ) Any particular street or apt. complex I should definitely look into?
Is it better for us to look at New Jersey instead, even with the commute?
Any help from current or past NYUCD students in a similar situation would help.

Thanks!!

Just move to Hoboken, NJ it is way more family friendly than NYC. Lots of kids in the parks and it feels like hoboken has more cops than residents.

Anywhere in hoboken is nice as long as you do not live near Jackson street(any street behind it and one street up) between 2nd and 7th street. Thats where there is low income housing and they can get pretty loud at night.

If you bike to the PATH station, your commutte will be roughly 35-40min and that is very doable. Over 50% of the class is around that point or more in travel time.

Start looking now to get familar with the prices because you can find places with out brokers which will charge you $1500-2500 to find a place

www.craigslist.org is a good start then select NJ and type in hoboken. Also google is good.

Best of luck

Peter Cooper Village / Stuyvesant Town is an absolutely fantastic community for families, however it will be expensive, I think 3600 for a 2 bedroom or so at open market price, lower if you can take over or sublet from someone that had a previous rate locked in.

A lot of my classmates started out commuting, but most bitch about it and more than not have already moved into the city because of the daily commute, but i imagine if you're disciplined and can handle it day in day out you'd be fine. what gets really annoying is all the down times you have and the weirdly scheduled days where you only have 2 hours of school.

hey chillydent,
im currently residing in newport, jersey city. i highly recommend this neighborhood bc of the reasonable rent and the amazing amenities. Not only do we get a great view of Manhattan, theres a mall 2 minutes away and a lot of restaurants. furthermore, the apartments here are all really nice and extremely affordable. i pay $2350 for a two bed room right now and trust me, you won't be able to find a better, cheaper place in the city. the commute to nyucd is approximately 25 minutes so its really not that bad. i would recommend you getting a 1 br here for about $1800-2000.

Thanks all you guys for your help!
It's just really overwhelming the prices you have to pay. I can't even imagine how to start paying for the rent here, especially with one income.

Thanks again you guys!
