Hi all!
I'm interested in a FM residency in the Detroit, MI area and was just hoping for some feedback on the quality/competitiveness of the programs there.
Would appreciate any info!
Thanks,
A 4th Year DO Student 🙂

As a fourth year DO student you will have the residency of your choice

There are a lot of great programs here (both in Detroit, and in the surrounding areas) and as a US grad, you should have your pick of the litter. I spent the last year at St Johns Hospital and Medical Center and really enjoyed my time. The hospital is smaller than most in the area but the birthing center is one of the safest in the country. The ER has like 60+ beds and is one of the busiest in the state. I'd also definitely check out Beaumont (the Troy campus FM program is unopposed as of right now). I did neurology at Beaumont-Troy and had a blast. New facilities, nice people. Those would be the two programs I'd apply to in the city. If I were staying in the state, I would personally consider any of the MSU or UM affiliated programs as well as the Grand Rapids programs. If you're not a native Detroiter, you will probably be happier in the more traditional parts of Michigan.

Henry Ford Hospital's Family Medicine program is the only inner city Family Medicine program in Detroit. The rest are all in the suburbs.

The pathology you'll see at Henry Ford is amazing. If you can manage these patients, you can manage any patient that you'll ever get in your clinic in actual practice.

The program is very hands on and the Hospital is known across the country as being one of the best. Henry Ford Hospital has the most ICU beds in the Midwest and is 3rd in the nation. The Hospital has one of the largest Graduate Medical Education systems in the country with over 700 residents/fellows.

Henry Ford's Family Medicine program has dual accreditation (MD and DO).

I would look into the UM program. The program is actually based out of a busy community hospital just outside of Ann Arbor which provides excellent training in a rural-esque environment. In addition, you have the opportunity to practice in an urban, underserved population in Ypsillanti (Only a few miles outside Ann Arbor). You will also rotate through the University hospital where you will get excellent training in one of the most respected tertiary care centers in the nation.

After meeting the UM faculty, I got the impression that they were more interested in faculty development and research than advancing the concept of the patient-centered medical home. The department seems to push its attendings to develop thier personal research interests. This is fine if you are going into medicine for the research aspect, but I feel like most people who choose family medicine are less interested in academia and more interested in clinical patient care.
I also got the impression that the family medicine department doesn't have the best working relationship with the IM and OB departments. If you are looking for a clinical career, interested in the patient centered medical home and programs working to advance that concept, then I would inquire about these things during your interviews in order to make an informed decision.
