Hi, my family own's a real estate office where I worked as a receptionist/assistant manager (approximating to ~320 hours)
During this time I also managed to obtain my real estate licence (completing like 5/6 exams over a span of 2 years, alongside with normal school).

So I'm wondering, can I add this to my EC list? Would this affect my application? Can I ask the head manager for a LOR? (note she is not family).

Thank you!

You can definitely add this to your EC. It will be great if you are still able to maintain high grades while juggling work and obtaining a license is a plus. However, keep in mind that your job will not be sufficient to excuse very poor grades.

As for LOR, IMO, even though your manager is not family, there is conflict in receiving a LOR from her. She is an employee of a company owned by your family.

Adcoms @Goro @gyngyn can shed a bit more light on this.

Perhaps if you are lacking in your other ECs, this would be an explanation of what you were busy doing.

Sure you can add it. Would I add it? Yes. But my family doesn't own a business so I'm not in this situation. Would I add that I got some meaningless license (they're now meaningless in your hopeful new career)? No.

I'm not sure if it would affect your app honestly and I don't wanna throw hypothetical answers out there. Ask the adcoms.

Sure you can ask your manager for an LOR. Would I , personally? No. Potential conflict of interest I would think. Seems cheesy as hell, too.

Concur!!

It's fine to add to your EC list. I suggest you particularly highlight your people skills and problem solving abilities. Even if you did not receive a pay check, this would be considered Employment - Not Medical/Clinical due to less-tangible benefits.

I would agree.
