I didn't quite understand the criteria of Fee Assistance Program that listed at AAMC... "300 percent or less of the poverty level." Does that mean if the poverty income is at $10000 a year, so I should be losing $20000 a year in order to be considered?

Deep breath.

Read the statement again.

300% of poverty level (if poverty level = $10k) = 3 x 10k = $30k

300% of poverty level or less is equivalent to "less than or equal to $30K."

Really not that hard, but that, of course, is what she said.

Wait a second what if I don't have any parents(foster child)? How do I submit an income statement if i don't know where they are?

I live with my brother so does he the person I get the income statement from?

Am I eligible 😕 By the way i'm still in the foster care system.

they take into account any income you make as well as the income of your legal guardian. not sure if that's your brother or not. and if the total of that is <$30,000 then i think you'd qualify. unfortunately, i did not qualify and had to put it all on a credit card which i will be paying back for a long time. one good thing, i guess, is that they tell you pretty much immediately if you qualify or not. for something this specific, i would say that you should get in touch with AMCAS directly. i'm assuming that you want to apply for the fee waiver before you sign up to take the MCAT, yeah? and then you would apply next june? it's unclear from your original comment where you are in the process.

anyways, good luck!

If you qualify for the FAP, then you get an mcat discount and a primary app waiver (up to 12 schools?), but I believe it is only for that year (you can re-apply for a max of 5 years). So, you may want to wait until January '09 to apply for the FAP, so that you can take the mcat and apply for schools in '09. Of course, if you want to take the mcat and apply for schools during different years, then you may just have to apply for the FAP more than once. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

you get approved/denied instantly once you fill out the info, but then i'm not sure how long it takes for them to process the app and validate everything. i would think you should be okay...

Man I read this thread title and thought medical schools had a whole NEW requirement

That would have made for an interesting interview day, though

From my previous experience, the FAP application is processed quickly. Took me less than a week, and I thought I was applying during "peak" times too - in September, which is when a lot of people are still scrambling to send in their primary app, I presume.

Nope, peak time is January/February, for all of those people who are trying to get the waiver for the spring MCAT. They release the new year's app in early January (around the 5th or 6th). Last year I got it going the day after it came out, filed my taxes, mailed my tax info to my dad so that he could add his stuff, got it finally on its way in early February, and got my decision March 19. This year I didn't apply until mid May, and got my decision on June 4.

Also, as far as the foster kid status goes, AMCAS will make appropriate accommodations for those types of situations. For example, my mom is not exactly an upstanding citizen, and never stays in the same place for long. We lost regular contact a long time ago. So, I explained the situation to AMCAS and they said that was fine, and I only had to send my return and my dad's. Besides, I'm sure there have been other foster kids, so they probably even already have a protocol for it...

Hello:

After I submit my FAP online, does aamc ask for any additional documents either from me and/or my parent. If so what are they? THanks!

they ask for copies of tax statements of both you and parents income.

its not hard, just make some quick copies and MAKE SURE your taxes are done asap.

i applied for the fap in march of 08 b/c my parents were lazy on their taxes and still recieved it.

don't stress about this, there are so many people paying full price that aamc will still give the fap to people late in the process.

once you send it to D.C., then they make sure you are not b.s'ing and send a confirmation email.

good luck!

what if i declare dependency under my mother? my parents have been divorced for 10 years, and i live with my mother. i pay for my education. do i still have to give my dad's financial information?

I think other people have said this but just to restate. Make sure you use proper tax information...the tax information needs to be from the year that you PAY for the MCAT. For example, I just registered for the May 2009 MCAT with FAP but I used 2008 tax records since I signed up in 2008. I don't know if this will be as big of an issue now since if you are registering anytime soon it will be for 2009. I just didn't want people to lose time trying to mail new tax information, etc.

P.S. I qualified for FAP but did not check the box while registering for the MCAT for the minority (either racially or economically) box. Will this be a problem?

oh man.... I wish i knew that!! I plan to take May 2009 MCAT too, and I purposely waited for the 2009 FAP to come out. I should've done everything back in 2008 so I don't have to wait for those stupid W2 forms. 😡

I ll throw in my questions here tooo

1. i know 13 schools are free on AMCAS. Does FAP also give discount for schools beyond the #13 i.e reduced fee or something.

2.Also while on this topic. How much AMCAS charge you for each school (is it $130??)

thanks a bunch

FAP is amazing! I applied to 13 schools for free, and all of the secondary application fees were waived. I paid $0 in application fees. 13 schools is the maximum # that they'll pay for. It goes according to your parents' income. They also reduced the MCAT to $80 (maximum 3 times you can take it at this reduced price). Apply and apply early. They'll send you an email to let you know when you've been awarded.

Have questions? PM me.

P.S. AACOMAS for the DO applications will only pay for 3 schools and you have to be in extreme need. My family of 4 makes only about $40,000/yr and I was ineligible.

i think its $50/school beyond 13 for the FAP...
Does anyone know if individual schools will help out with secondaries?

FAP opens in 4 days! YAYYY!:soexcited:

I checked all schools in the past week. I think out of th 130 there are ~10 who wont waive ...otherwise secondary fee is waived!..........sweet

Multiply these numbers x 3 to see if you're eligible for FAP. Your family's income must be 300% of the poverty level or less.

I have 8 people in my household, but 2 of which are married and out of the house, one of whom goes to school though... There's no way that my parents make over $100K combined, and even if I count the other 2 out, there's no way they make over $85K. My question is: What is considered the household size? Am I considered in the household size even though I'm not claimed as a dependent?

I hate how they'll count you as independent, but won't take your income separately... My parents haven't given me more than $500 even if you combine food during college that I haven't paid for myself...

If you are independent, it's you, your spouse, your kids, whoever you provide more than 50% support for.

If you are dependent, its you, parents, and anyone your parents support more than 50%.

Does it help or hurt to have a number of dependents when trying to get approved for FAP application?

does anyone know? if it hurts your application or help it is you claim dependents?

sorry to bump this. i just got approved for FAP (yay!) and i'm wondering if i have to notify schools somehow so they can waive their secondary fees. or does it happen automatically?

also, does this mean i check off that i'm applying as disadvantaged? if i don't check that (because i don't know how i feel about that ethically) is that okay?

lastly, i'm applying to more than 13 schools. can i selectively use this to cover the 13 most expensive secondary fees? 😳

You don't have to tell schools right now...when you're doing the secondaries, there will be a section that's like "check enclosed, or credit card number, or fee waiver enclosed." Different schools do it differently (e.g. some want you to send them proof of the waiver, some take your word for it, some dont even waive fees), but it'll usually be pretty clear on the secondaries how to deal with it.

You def don't have to apply as disadvantaged if you got the fee waiver...I got the FAP and didn't apply as disadvantaged and it never came up in my apps or interviews.

Your secondaries will be waived at all schools you apply to, not just 13...your primary fee is only covered for 13 though, and it's 30 dollars per school after that, so everything is the same price. Let me know if you have more questions- I was equally confused about the FAP last year so I would be happy to answer your questions.

I received my FAP authorization couple weeks ago...

needless to say, I almost feel that it is a privilege to be broke!!

Hey guys I just recently applied for FAP today and I plan on taking the MCAT this september. I am pretty sure that I qualify, but I am a little confused on the part concerning the free apps to 13 schools, because most likely I will be applying to school next cycle(if that because I plan on entering the peace corp for atleast 2 years before going to medical school), so ultimately can/will I have to reapply for FAP again in the spring to apply to schools?

-Thanks a bunch everyone

you have to reapply ever year.

example: i took my mcat in 2007. So I applied for FAP before I registered for the MCAT. It doesn't matter if you don't use the 13 schools the first time around. I applied for medical school in 2008, so I reapplied for FAP in 2008 before the application cycle. There is a limit on how many times you can apply. I think its 5, but don't quote me on that.

Does applying for the FAP and waiting for authorization put a hold on your primary application?

And do I have to be completely validated by the FAP before I send in my primary to be eligible for waiving the fees of 13 first schools? I assume I would have to be, since I would have already paid and they're probably not gonna give me a retroactive refund.

I could then use it for the secondaries though right?

Yeah, I was right, I just read that it's not retroactive.

I'm guessing it shouldn't affect the verification of primaries and secondaries as well?

Any thoughts on this? I know they don't refund retroactively... So if I get verified for FAP after submitting my primaries, would that get carried over to the secondaries? I'm hoping this is so ... I acted prematurely submitting my app then realizing i can qualify for fap 😕

Yeah. I'm going to assume it's gonna work the way we think it will. I'm guessing the schools don't even really know that we're part of the FAP program until we tell them, which they will then ask for proof.

Quick question... I applied and got FAP for this year, but then I decided not to apply until next year. I just graduated, and will be starting my job soon, where my salary will be a shade below the 3x poverty level for a 1 person household (I'll be living by myself not with my parents). Will I still need to include my parents income when applying for the FAP next year? Thanks! This is what the website says:

"Note also that the FAP does not draw a distinction between dependent and independent student status, and, therefore, all applicants must provide parental financial data for the FAP."
