  • What is unique or special about this specialty? Mostly Outpatient. Chronic Disease management. I think it's akin to Primary Care without the headache.
  • What other specialties did you consider and why did you pick this one? Other more traditionally intellectual - Heme/Onc.
  • What challenges will this specialty face in the next 10 years? Insurance Companies and Karens.
  • What are common practice settings for this specialty? Outpatient
  • How challenging or easy is it to match in this specialty? For USMDs - Easy. USDOs - Not hard. International - Increasingly harder
  • What excites you most about your specialty in the next 5, 10, 15 years from now? Advances in technology, increased drug availability which target and fix insulin resistance.
  • Does your specialty currently use or do you foresee the incorporation of technology such as Artificial Intelligence? Yes
  • What are some typical traits to be successful in this specialty? (For example, organization skills, work independently) Good with People. Able to Speak well and convey complex disease to individuals who get their **** from Karens and are inclined to believe in random crap to make them feel better about them sleeping 4 hours a night and eating 3 packs of doritos a day.
  • What does a typical workday consist of in your specialty? 32-36 patient facing hours. an extra 10 for other. So usually 45-50 hours.
  • What is the career progression for your specialty? Decent enough. If youre business savy and you can vibe with people you'll go places.
  • How has your work impacted your life dynamics? What is your work-life balance? Decent to Good. Especially if you're in private practice or a contracted group. For those who are bound to hospitals or underserved areas - usually due to visa status it can be mixed. With increasing illnesses and decreased education/social status the treatment of diseases like this have diminishing satisfaction.
  • How does healthcare policy impact your specialty? Somewhat - I have a small panel of transgender patients. Some endocrinologists exclusively do transgender care. Similarly insurance companies play into this too.
