ok so if someone asks me, how many ATP can you get from a 16 carbon fatty acid, how do you figure it out?

what about an odd number like 17?

Post it on a message board and wait for someone who thinks they know everything to answer the question??? I know that is what I would do.

12 carbons = 5 cycles of splitting
5 ATP per cycle
5 x 5 = 25 ATP

6 acetyl coA x 12 ATP per acetyl coA = 72ATP

25+72=97 ATP
97ATP - 2ATP (for charging) = 95ATP

booyah!

Now it is time for some other person who thinks they know it all to tell imtiaz he's wrong because he may or may not have forgotten one step in the equation.

er i just realized i answered the wrong question.

anyway here you go again! this is fun!

16carbons = 8 acetyl coA and 7 cycles of splitting

7 cycles x 5 atp = 35ATP
8 acetyl coa x 12ATP = 96ATP

96+35=131ATP
131-2 = 129ATP

booyah! (again)

That was one I wasn't expecting. The same person who thinks they know it all corrects themself. Amazing.

Get back to work, Jalby

did you get that question on q bank too? i just laughed hit b, my favorite, and moved on. didn't even look at the answer. i probably got it wrong

btw, i can't even take a break from studing!!! i turned on the tv to watch my soap while i was eating lunch, and this St. Joseph's aspirin commericial comes on that details the flow of blood in a song....the little aspirin bounces on the words so you can sing along!!! for a second, i thought i was hallucinating!
