In humans, where does fatty acid synthesis take place?

I thought smooth ER produces lipids and therefore fatty acids by extension. TBR, in a multiple choice, didn't even list SER. It said that it occurs in cytoplasm.

So what gives?

FA Synthesis occurs mainly in cytosol of the liver cells but also in fat cells. The cytosol also contains the necessary acetyl CoA, malonyl CoA, and reducting agent (NADPH). But the elongation of fatty acids would occur in the smooth ER.

Extra notes:
Beta oxidation occurs mainly in the mitochondria of the liver and muscle. Having the synthesis and degradation in two different places of the cell adds a layer of regulation. Malonyl CoA shuts down beta oxidation transport from the mitochondria inner membrane.

I thought it was in the mitochondria :/

like the guy said, beta oxidation (or fatty acids digestion) occurs in mito. synthesis must be somewhere else, else they would be digested as they are made.

Not if synthesis and digestion occurred in different parts of the mitochondrion.

breakdown occurs in matrix so it can't be there. the intermembrane space is continuous with the cytoplasm. where else could it occur?
