I know the amcas fees gets reduced, but how does the fee assitance program work for secondaries. Would one have to pay the full amount for secondaries, or do schools waive the secondary fee? Any experiences? thanks!

Hi Birdie,

I didnt get the FAP waiver, but I am pretty sure that the individual AMCAS schools are not obligated to waive the secondary app fee. However, I would be surprised if they do NOT waive the secondary app fee if you have a FAP waiver. Most schools just tell you to send a copy of the AMCAS waiver and they waive your secondary fee.

I'm just wondering if you actually get the waiver approved or if you're just inquiring. AMCAS is pretty stingy when it comes to those waivers.

FYI: at least one non-AMCAS school, NYU, told me that they would accept the FAP as application fee currency.

Thanks for the insight AlmostThere. When I called amcas today, they said that I have been "temporarily approved", whatever that means. I think they are still in the process of verifying all the forms since I only sent them in a few days ago. I am just concerned about the secondary fees for schools cuz I know the FAP waiver doesn't apply to those.

I applied to a bunch of schools (14 to be exact) and the only school that didn't accept my fee waiver was georgetown. i know that amcas does take some time to process your information, but i don't recall anything concerning temporary approvals.

let me know if you have any other questions.

I know U of Maryland does not accept fee waiver. There's some other schools that do not. Most will at least reduce your secondary fee with proof of AMCAS fee waiver, and most of those will eliminate the secondary fee.

Just goes to show which schools are really about recruiting disadvantaged applicants...

Good lord. My understanding is that AMCAS wavers are hard to get - so why would GT NOT give anybody one? Greedy bastards. I don't like having to pay application fees, but I'm pretty well able to handle it. It's a shame anybody would be discouraged from applying purely for financial reasons. I hate thinking that my medical school class may be missing a few people who should be there just for economic reasons.
</ rant>

The fee waiver IS hard to get, but if you get it, it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. You get the 10 free AMCAS schools (about $400) savings, but even if you apply to more than 10, they will (with the exception of the aforementioned few) waive their fees for you as well. I probably saved about $1000 total, which I had to spend on travel for interviews.

Now if my landlord only had a rent waiver program...
