Only 2 months into surgery intern year, and im already feeling burned out 🙁....if anesthesia residency is going to be this time consuming and draining then its going to be a long 4/5 yrs

Just wait until you're an attending after a few years......
Agreed. It's tough sledding out there. You gotta weigh pros and cons of ski trip vs. vacation in tropical paradise, which 18 year old Scotch to buy, how much stock to buy and when, etc. It sucks in the real world, trust me.

+pity+
When I was a fellow the interns couldn't even take overnight call with us because of all the rule changes. Dude, you're fresh out of 4th yr med school where u prolly had more free time than u knew what to do with. Use this time now to learn how to become a badass physician

Seriously, take this time to learn. I learned more in my intern year than all of third and fourth year of med school. Take it in and use your time wisely

Remember, it's a job. When people pay me to drink beer and watch college football, I'll do that. Otherwise, medicine isn't a bad gig.

Depression is a real thing OP and it will turn everything upside down. There's nothing wrong with seeking help and support. Lack of sleep, isolation and feeling like a know-nothing intern is the prefect recipe for depression.

Then add to the fact that I carry more than 20 patients .. have to preround and be ready for rounds by 615. talk about malignant. I didnt go into surgery and am glad i didnt. I know there are many here who preach surgical fields are the way to go, but it just isnt so for many people. I think one needs to be super gungho and motivated abt surgery from the jump, so that you can make it through 5 years of getting beaten into submission with just antidepressants and ECT, otherwise youll just crash and burn in the first couple years.

Learn? Intern year was lots of scut work with moments of education tossed in. Was so worked that I was able to read about 3 times all year, and woke up with my face in the book.

I'd say take the time to try and learn the flow, and distinguish sick from not sick. Two of the most important skills you can have

OP: It does get better. It really does. I remember one of my co-interns, back in the day, in tears on the first day. She ended up being a chief resident in her field - and a good one at that!

Intern year is just painful. But life gets better.

Ive been working more than 120 hrs a wk this month..... intern yr sucks ..

120hrs? How is that even possible....most hrs i wrked was sicu and it was like 95-100. Are u taking 24hr calls?
