Out of curiosity, do programs require having passed all 3 USMLE Step exams... or, may all 3 COMLEX scores passed be used in place of them? I took USMLE Step 2CK only. I've matched into an ACGME anesthesiology program. At this time, I'm considering fellowships (not dead set on doing one at this point) but was curious about the requirements. Thanks!

It doesn't matter.

USMLE/COMLEX is for state licensure purposes only.

Having the USMLE might only help you if the fellowship wants to see you USMLE scores instead of COMLEX (and I find this highly unlikely).

FWIW, I took all 3 steps of the USMLE and bailed on COMLEX 3 and got y unrestricted medical license without problem (although I am obviously not in one of the big 5 states).

I've heard most fellowships don't care much about your boards, especially step 3. They pick their fellows more from residency rep, lors, performance on anesthesia specific exams

Sounds good, thanks for the replies!

I plan to apply for Resolution 42, and if I'm not given exemption then I won't care... don't plan to ever live in the Big 5 states anyway.

Was this before the clinical skill boards were required? If I wasn't doing a DO internship before I start my ACGME training in 2012, then I'd skip comlex 3 and take the USMLE step 3 in a heart beat. However, I think you have to take USMLE CE to be eligible for USMLE step 3.

that is correct, no clinical exams, just I/II/III.
