In general, they get paid a resident's salary. For example, if you were a cardiology fellow, it may go something like this:
Internal Medicine
PGY-1 38k
PGY-2 39k
PGY-3 40k
Cardiology Fellowship
PGY-4 41k
PGY-5 42k
PGY-6 43k
Interventional Cardiology
PGY-7 44k
Hope this helps.

the silver lining is that, as a board certified internist, you should be very comfortable with moonlighting, which can easily equal or even surpass your fellowship salary, if you find the time and are so inclined.

Moonlighting: Is just a fancy way of saying.....working outside your residency or fellowship duties.
Hope that helps!!
Working on the weekends or taking a shift at a different hospital. Docs I've worked with have made over a grand in a weekend. Some residency programs say these hours count towards your resident work-limit, and prohibit any of their residents from moonlighting.Moonlighting
