Fellowship vs. Assistantship

In general, assistantships are usually paid positions in exchange for some type of work (e.g., as a teaching or research assistant). Conversely, fellowships are more akin to scholarships, with the main stipulation being that you use the provided money to be able to better focus on your academic pursuits.
