I interviewed at a new residency program that has great appeal to me because of location and one-on-one attending time. However, it is a new program (University program) and they don't have any fellowships. Should this be a drawback when making my decision for residency? Some of the other programs (mid-tiered) that I interviewed at do offer fellowships with strong in house placement. Do you think a new (University) program without a track record should be avoided because of unknown fellowship placement or am I being paranoid?

Thanks in advance.

That does not sound paranoid at all. Why take the risk?

Risk = I'm married with children and my wife's family is near the program and family life would be significantly better for my wife and children if we were there. That being said, my future career is equally important.

Very genuine and legit answer. There is something to be said for the happiness of your spouse and personal life. Unless you want to do hardcore academics or a competitive fellowship I would be pushed to be the trailblazer.

Are there any other local/more established options?

You didn't mention the most important piece of information to help answer your question. Future plans?

Plan is cardiology.

If you are dead serious about it, then you gotta keep in mind that there is a decent chance that you might not be able to do it coming from a program with zero reputation. Have people graduated from this program? did any of them do Cardiology?

thats hard to say, esp with cards…it is one of the more competitive fellowships and who you know as well as research is important…

obviously many people come from programs that don't have fellowships in cards, but it is harder…

you have to ask yourself, if you don't get a cards fellowship….will you be ok with that? or will you regret the choice?

you're family has already put up with 4 years of med school and all that entails…are they ok to continue for another 3 to get you where you want to be?
