We've addressed the match, and the career, but not much on here about fellowships.
1) Any thoughts as to how one goes about getting some good fellowships? OKAP scores, letters, etc. I suppose.

2) How big is the discrepancy in compensation for the various specialities in ophtho?...for example, peds versus general, glaucoma versus retina, etc. Since most of us thought ophtho was pretty cool in general, it seems tough to pick a specific specialty on interest alone. Even the money-hungry bastards must be having a tough time with this one, since from what I understand, volume tends to speak more than specialty, usually--ie. a high volume refractive guy could pull down much more than a retina guy debating the utility of 23 vs 25 gauge vitrectors in ophthalmic academia.

3)Finally, any thoughts on why people are choosing to do certain fellowships might be good as well, since it seems like that decision approaches so quickly and prematurely!! (I must admit I had no idea that ocular pathology was a possibility till Andrew brought that to the table....speaking of unique training, anyone thinking about doing a uveitis fellowship??) 😎

Excellent idea for a post 👍 . I have wondered myself what goes into selection for fellowship. Scuttlebutt has it that OKAPs are big if you do well, although they are not public you just have to put them on your CV. I would like to hear what else goes into being a good candidate. Info on a uveitis fellowship would be nice too.
