Felony charged and residency

Well I think if she doesnt get convicted then no one needs to know, unless your school knows and might throw it in a letter. If it is something stupid then she might try to plea down to a misdemeanor. Alternatively, she better have a damn good reason for doing what she did. If you want more specific advice post a brief explanation of what happened and what she is charged with.

If I remember correctly, I think the ERAS application asks if you were ever convicted of a felony. Can anyone confirm this? Residency programs often run background checks after you match. I imagine being charged isn't the worst, but getting convicted will likely end your career.

Ah, man is a voyeuristic animal, is he not?

Applying for residency is only part of the problem, dealing with the medical board is the other(and more significant issue). Your friend would be well advised to do what she can to get the charges dropped or reduced, and have her record expunged at a later date. She will have to confront this issue when applying for her licence, and depending on the case, she may not get a licence.

Friend of mine, who is in her 3rd year, may be charged. Do you think she'll still be able to apply for residency?

She can apply even if convicted-- but naturally it's not something the person reviewing her application is going to be thrilled about. Chances are there are people as qualified or better than her WITHOUT a felony conviction. Who would YOU take?

I'm no lawyer, obviously, but she should get a good one NOW (and not an overworked free public defender. If she needs to take out more loans to get a good one, it'd be money well spent. Otherwise she risks flushing 2+ years of med school down the drain) to see if she can avoid conviction.

If convicted her best policy would be NOT TO LIE about it on her application; she can be convicted of fraud for lying on her resume. If the residency program that she applies to has her rotate at a VA-- whoops, she just lied to the federal government and they will not be happy with her and she can see actual prison time.

Here's a story: A guy that graduated 3 years ahead of me in med school and did residency there got nailed for possession/attempt to buy (or whatever the legal term is). The short story is that the cops snagged his dealer and this guy paged the dealer while he was being booked. The cops, ever so courteous, answered the page and snagged this guy also. I just googled the guy-- he's doing fine it seems, moving onto a FP residency after IM and getting certified in accupuncture. He even had his MT license suspended sometime in the late 90's for substance abuse (big surprise) but despite that he went on to finish his residency and is practicing now. I'm not sure how I feel about that, but there you go.
