Firstly, i just found this forum, and already found it amazing, but had a few quick questions.

I am currently in my second year of CC with a 3.7 GPA. I am hoping to transfer to UCLA by this time next year (one more year of CC to go)

Anyways, i know there is no "perfect" major for pre-med. i was just wondering what you guys thought would be good for me. Lately i have been thinking Sociology, but i am afraid because i do not know how difficult sociology will be in UCLA, and if something happens and i do not make it into med school, what i will do with a sociology degree.

I am currently signing up for classes for my next semester, and i have almost fully completed the igetc already, just need my science credits, so i need to pick my major to start taking the pre-reqs.

Thanx in advance.

we cant possibly tell you what majors are good for you. We have no idea who you are and we know nothing about your interests. Im curious why you need to pick your major in order to start taking pre reqs? You can take the med school pre reqs as any major, isnt doesnt matter if you are sociology or undeclared. Just sign up for a class and take it. If you dont make it in to med school, then you improve your application and try again. Your major isn't going to influence that.

i know that, i mean pre-reqs for the major

Im just trying to think in the views of going pre-med in the future, i really have no idea what im doing, lol

BTW, i am also in the honors (TAPS) program, if that makes any diff

also, what do you mean by "your major isn't going to influence that.", as in, my major will not influence my med school acceptance?

What i meant by that was if your goal really is to go to med school, then you aren't going to give up after one cycle. You are going to keep applying again until you get in, so theres not really any need to think of your back up career. But if you do major in sociology and decide not to go to med school you could always just go to grad school. Or you could just go into something completely unrelated to sociology. Your life career does not have to have anything to do with your college major.

yea, i agree. your major doesn't affect whether you get accepted to medical school. in fact, medical schools accept a wide variety of majors, not just science and biology majors.

also, this is what i think. sociology isn't a bad major to pick if you're really interested in it. you should pick something that you want to study because it really interests you. on the other hand, your future job (if you don't get into med school or it doesn't work out) doesn't depend on your major. it depends on your experiences and skills that you have. you usually get this through summer internships. i was a chemical biology major, but i couldn't find anything because i dind't have the essential lab skills. so throughout this year, i had to teach and tutor in order to make some money. so, to sum up, your major doesn't really matter. you should just study what interests you.

finally, in retrospect, i wish i studied more humanities because it will help you on the verbal section of the MCAT. I'm assuming you haven't taken it yet. If you haven't, definitely take lots of humanities. It will help you read faster and get the main point quickly, which is crucial for doing well on the verbal section. good luck and ask any questions. also, you can check out my website in the signature below. i have a section about choosing majors, but it's basically the same thing as i wrote here.
