if you had "meh" LORs...ask different people next time.

Oh, I absolutely will. No last minute 'crap I have to ask someone else' situations, and definitely no 'I say I want to write it and ask you to ask me, then it turns out I'm not being as positive as I should be' situations. Everyone this year, I'm sure about 100%.

I think it also depends on how you put it as well. Someone who says they will definitely be an owner of ______ type of clinic might sound kind of naive if it kind of just stemmed from the fact that they worked in that setting for a few years and *loved* it (note: this is just a hypothetical example here, not talking about any posters above). And the way they put that might make them come off naive too. If the PS talked about the challenges of being a business owner, and how to make a successful business enterprise out of vet med, it might be one thing. But to say I saw dr. so and so treat mrs. x's sick poodle and i love the type of relationship vets have with their clients - I'm definitely going to own my own clinic one day... is a bit different.

It is funny you say that because in my interview I was asked a lot of questions about business and practice ownership and was praised in my file review about having a great sense of business management/practice ownership, but at the same time I was looked down upon for being sure about mixed animal practice and ownership of clinic. I did express wanting to buy the practice I've worked at for 10 years, and the practice owner wrote that he couldn't wait to sell it to me in his LOR.

I honestly feel sometimes with these things it truly is a Catch 22.

Well I mean, I could see how something like that would be seen as too narrow in focus. Talking about buying a specific practice from a specific vet is quite different from having a clear, focused interest in an area of veterinary medicine. I mean, it seems a lot more inflexible to say that, I guess. They could certainly see it as you not wanting to be open to anything new - sort of like the way that "academic incest" is frowned upon in academia.

Maybe you could frame it a different way, that working for X doctor has really inspired an interest in the mixed animal field because of this reason or that reason which connects to OTHER experiences/personality traits and you're interested in owning a practice one day because you are interested in running a business and etc etc.
