THis list will be more complete (though still someone will be upset about it).

Pick all the programs you will rank or ranked this year. This will give a good survey of what programs are interviewing the most people.

Man, Pathstudent, why the disrespect for Texas? TTU, UTSA and Baylor University; but not BCM and Methodist (along with UTSW the most competitive programs in TX)???

And next time, alphabetize, slacker!
🙂

UTSW is in there.

It is hard when so many programs have similar names.

I copy pasted a lot of them from Scutwork who does things regionally.

Awww- cut the poor guy some slack. Apparently, people outside of Texas are unaware that Baylor College of Medicine in Houston is not the same as or even affiliated with Baylor University, at least not for like 40 years. And I guess Methodist just ain't gonna get no love, even though it is for sure way more desirable than TTU- yikes!! But none of this really matters anyway, does it?

As Lyle Lovett would say-
"And next time somebody laughs at you
You just tell 'em you're not from Texas
That's right you're not from Texas
But Texas wants you anyway"

Yeah, I wasn't going to say anything. Is the BUMC program at the end in the one in Dallas? I just know there are at least two, Baylor and Dallas.

The lack of Methodist is just amusing because we specifically brought it up in the other thread. 🙂

It is a valiant effort Pathstudent... don't feel bad.

Why was this thread changed from voting for the Top 5 programs on our ROLs to voting for all the programs that we will rank. Listing more than our top 5 choices is much less informative since most of us will match at one of our top 5. I suggest we return to a poll of our top 5 choices only.

i think both polls would be useful. if someone makes a top 3 or top 5 poll i'd vote in that one too.

36 people have voted in the poll.. the numbers suggest that most of them aren't voting for many more than 5... I wouldn't get too worked about it.

Cook County? Cook County isn't participating in the match this year. Three ppl were invited to interviews and actually ranked the program (sarcasm). Wow.

Although fun, I'm not sure these polls are at all useful for anything... it's a random sampling of 30-some individuals. Based on the results, apparently Minnesota will be more competitive than/is favored over WashU.

Of course these are just for fun, but more people ranking a place doesn't imply it is more competitive. Program A might have 10 spots available and have interviewed 80 people while Program B might have 3 spots and interviewed 30. A lot more people will likely be ranking Program A, but it could be very well less competitive to get into.

Don't take things too seriously, but I do think we get an overall picture of where the hotspots are either because they interview a lot of people and/or a lot of people want to go there.

I wasn't taking it seriously at all, and I do enjoy them... thanks for putting it together (I was just poking fun of your statement about having more polls being useful).

I'm surprised so many people ranked Ron Paul... I thought he was a retired OB/Gyn, not a pathologist... 😉

I disagree. We all know how many people from this forum were invited to interview at the various programs by looking at the interview thread. I think that it is also fair to assume that most of the people who will submit answers to the poll will be regular posters. Therefore, taking the example of the U. Minnesota since it was mentioned here. 5 people from the interview thread were invited to interview there. If we had a poll of say people's top 3 ROL (or top 5 ROL) then we would have a better idea of people's impressions of the program. By allowing people to submit their entire ROL we loose this sensitivity.

Only that's a totally false assumption, because the interview thread wasn't necessarily kept current as people cancelled interviews, and there is no requirement that people who posted on that thread respond to this poll, or vice versa. Poll respondants could be anyone, from applicants to residents to PDs to 13 year olds who got lost looking for lolcat pics...

Top 3 or Top 5 would keep the spread down to the programs people liked the most, but you could look at the original poll thread and get a sense of that.

Exactly. I also first posted my first 2-3 interviews on the "interview" thread, but then stopped as I realized that it was pointless (other thank to stroke my own ego about how many awesome interviews I had, and to make other people feel insecure that they hadn't yet heard from Cornell or whatever). I thought the original intention was for applicants on this forum to get together on the trail, but I soon found out that I was the only applicant any given day 3/4 of the time.
Besides what was already mentioned, SDN is NOT a typical sampling of the applicant pool, but has significant ascertainment bias with super gunners, MD/PHDs, and a few select others. According to the polls, nearly 1/4 applicants interviewed at Cleveland clinic. Really?

which either way would be unfortunate since I believe the cleveland clinic filled 4/9 spots out of the match. NRMP states that they have 5 available positions.

The point is that the original poll thread was closed and should not have been because it was more useful than this current thread.

Most of us went to more than 5 interviews and many went to around 10. Furthermore, most of us will rank nearly every program that visited. Therefore, in its current form this thread merely gives an idea of where we interviewed, not which programs we liked the most.

gbwillner: Whether or not this sample is biased is irrelevant to this discussion.

No one is ever going to be happy, ok? I tried editing the poll, that didn't make people happy. Edited some more. Still no. So pathstudent created a new poll, and still some people aren't happy. I think my impression and that of most others was that the new poll was a replacement for the previous one. Whatever. There is no way to do something like this and satisfy everyone, so just go with what we have. If you want to make a final, definitive poll which answers all of your questions, go ahead and try it. But once people are voting on their third or fourth poll on the same exact subject, they tend to get poll fatigue, trust me.

And I don't think the results are going to be as interesting as you hope - only a small portion of the applicant pool is represented here, and it may not be a reasonable approximation of the overall applicant pool. So there are no real conclusions you can draw from it anyway.

To be honest, I didn't even read the poll, so I only put my top five ranks. Maybe others did the same.

i think the more useful thing will be if/when people post their ROLs after feb 27. i know a few people have said they will, and i'll probably be willing to post my top 5 at least. and i'll certainly be willing to post when i match the afternoon of march 20th. i'll be one of the few sober people in my class since i have to do something later that afternoon involving driving, so i can probably find 5 min to come on here and post where i'm going.

Can anyone produce a list of number of spots offered in the match?

You must be some sort of masochist, given how much love the current poll is getting... 🙂

especially in light of the fact that pathstudent got more accurate, and complete information with one click via the NRMP. live and learn . . .
