I am retaking my DAT next week, and I am aiming for a 20 AA. From my practice tests, my science scores are around 21, PAT 20, RC 18---19. I have a 3.80 cGPA and a 3.69 sGPA. I have excellent ECs (leadership in three clubs, around 100 volunteering hours, around 100 shadowing hours in three different places, one semester of being a research assistant.) a good recommendation from a dentist, and two letters from my professors. I am a NY resident. I am an Asian male, but I am from a socioeconomically disadvantaged family. Please tell me if should add or remove any schools. Please help me to finalize the list so I submit everything next week! Thank you very much!

That's gonna be really expensive. Remeber it's like 93 per school and then 75 per school for secondaries. With your stats, I would apply to fewer

Hi, I probably not going to apply every single one on the list. What schools would you suggest me to remove?

Wait until you get your DAT scores, and then ask. That will alter the number of schools you should apply to.

What'd you get on the DAT the first time?

Yes...I think you should focus on the schools you have the best chance at. I would probably take out University of Michigan, VCU, UCSF, UoP, Indiana, and Maryland.

Can you please explain why I should take those schools out?

Disagree... with a DAT retake on the way, you may very well have a shot at any or all of those schools above. Post back when you've got your scores and we can help you narrow, if you feel you can't afford to apply to 22.

It's a somewhat unpopular opinion, but I suggest applying to as many as you can afford/feel comfortable with. The application cycle is shrouded in mystery, and no one can tell you with absolute certainty why one school invites you over another. Going on stats alone, I "shouldn't" have gotten interviews at many of the schools where I did (two of which are in pennjenn's remove suggestions), and was totally passed over at schools I thought I'd end up at. My point is, if you can swing the extra $, applying to more schools allows you to be a bit more choosy when interviews start rolling in.

ps. as a nys resident, why no stony brook?

It might sound ridiculous. They require me to take the TOEFL exam because English is not my first language... The minimum score is 90. I took it once back in high school without studying for it at all, and I got a 89. I don't have time to take it again since I am preparing for the DAT and I want to submit everything in July..

You're OOS for these and there's a small chance for anyone OOS to get in. Most Maryland OOS spots are for students living in closer states than NY (Delaware, DC, Virginia). VCU, Michigan, and Indiana are similar in that the OOS seats are kind of misleading. I am an OOS resident of Michigan and when I spoke to an admissions officer there she mentioned that there is a really small chance of being accepted or even interviewed OOS. Only apply if you think you would be one of the 1-2 people from NY that Michigan will accept this cycle. You may have a better shot with UCSF and UoP. Not too sure about their admissions.

Couldn't you take it again (without studying) and score above a 90? You have another 4+ years of English under your belt at this point. 🙂

The earliest one I can take is the one that is a week after my DAT. I want to see how I did on the DAT first and decide whether I should take the TOEFL. The stats of Stony Brook are pretty high, and my RC has not been very great...... (around 18--19). I don't want to waster another couple hundred dollars if my DAT is not good enough for Stony Brook.

This is something that EVERY applicant should understand. What is a few extra hundred dollars up front when it could potentially save you thousands and thousands in the long run by helping you get into a better/cheaper program?

What resources are you using for RC?

I am using CDR, Bootcamp and qVault. I scored around 17--19 on all of them. I did get one or two 20 22 on CDR, but I dont think that is representative.
