Hey all

I'll be matriculating this summer and upon applying for financial aid for my first time I was informed I never registered for the Selective Service. I had no idea what this was until doing more research on it, but I learned all male U.S. citizens and male immigrants, who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. I am now 26 and terrified that there is noting I can do in this situation to regain being able to qualify for federal aid.

Does anybody have more information regarding or recommendations for next steps to make?

Much appreciated.

From the SSS website,

If you have passed your 26th birthday and are now being denied eligibility for federal student financial aid, federal job training, or federal employment, or are having difficulty obtaining U.S. citizenship because you failed to register, you have the following recourse available to you: explain to the official handling your case (for example, a student financial aid officer) the reasons for your failure to register with Selective Service.

A non-registrant may not be denied any benefit if he can "show by a preponderance of evidence" that his failure to register was not knowing and willful. Offer as much evidence supporting your case, and as much detail, as possible.

You may be asked for an official response from the Selective Service System, which is referred to as a “status information letter.”

I am no expert on this, but seeing as you’ll have to petition this and with the government who knows how long that would take, you might have to look into private loan options to pay for school.

Yeah, received more information and I have to file some sort of appeal to my school's financial aid office, which may or may not be approved.

Did you never file FAFSA before?

This is my first time filing FAFSA. My undergrad tuition was paid out of pocket.
