I'm not really sure where to post this questions, but do I have a better chance for financial assistance and grants if I claim myself independent for next year's taxes or will my chances be the same if my parent's claim me as a dependent?

Its my understanding that students seeking professional degrees are considered independent. How long are you legally aloud to be a dependent on your parents taxes anyway? Maybe im just old but I feel like ive been independent for some time now.

If you were born before January, 1st of 1986, you're considered independent by the processor of FAFSA...that's it. You may need to report your parents income if you didn't work on a check at all last year, but it's not required... but I think it'll be asked for later on by d-school(s).
