Hi,

New MD0 here! And totally clueless about fin aid. I'm international so I don't know how the finaid works here. I can't qualify for federal aid, but my school is able to provide institutional aid. What I'm confused about is...I know they calculate the expected family contribution (EFC) from the FAFSA, but does that mean, the school fin aid office will find ways to help me pay off whatever tuition is remaining (outside of the EFC)?

Is there ever a chance of the school not being able to meet my needs (tuition minus EFC)?

Thanks!

The school usually takes the expected family contribution into consideration for the need -based assistance. Yes they will find ways to help you as far as they can but there is still a posibility that you might not get everything covered.

Knowing that you are international, they will probably try really hard to help you but they are limited by the amount of money they have available.

You should probaly start looking into private loans now as an alternative incase you need a little extra. For these, you would need a credit-worthy greencard holder or citizen to co-sign for you. The terms are not that different from the federal loan (maybe the rate might be slightly higher).

You really need to cover all your bases early because not having enough money to cover school by the time you start will put your visa status in jeopardy.

Thanks so much for the quick reply!

I just noticed that the priority deadline for this school has passed! But I just got my acceptance. What might this mean? 😕

Nothing much!! It is just that.. a priority date. Its by no means a detriment to your ability to get loans or other financial help from school. Just fill out the FAFSA, ASAP.👍

whew. Thanks Timus!!!!!

Oh by the way: Fill out the FAFSA ASAP like the other poster said. As at a few years ago, international students without green cards could not submit it. It would return it as rejected so that was a problem for people like you who needed it for an EFC calculation for intramural fin aid. I don tknow if it has changed but you need to figure it out quickly so you can let the school know. The school go by the results of the FAFSA so if you are not going to be able to submit one, they need to know ASAP so they can figure out another way to evaluate your need.

Thanks Mr Hawkings.

I just called and they said I'd file a paper version with the school. Wow, good to know beforehand!

You guys are so awesome!! Thank you!
